In the webshop, you often have items that you have several variants of. This can be, for example, items that are available in different sizes. In Quick3, you can collect these variants on one item, without publishing items for each individual variant. It is important to specify that each variant is an item that must exist itself, which has its own item number.
Step 1
Variant types
Before adding variants to an item, you must specify variant types and variant values. You do this by going to the main menu and finding "Variant Types" under the webshop category. Here you add the relevant variant types that is suitable for the kind of items you are going to sell. In the example below, we have created the variant types length, sizes that typically apply to clothing, and shoes. These are used according to relevance for the goods.
Variant values
In the example below, you see where we add variant values to the variant type. The values created here are used to connect an item to a value, later in the process.
Here you can also choose how the variants are going to be displayed in the webshop on the product, under "Picker". Here you can choose between having a drop-down menu with text, or buttons with text.
Item number pattern explanation:
For the variant type:
- Enter text that says where in the item number the variant is read.
- Use '?' to enter a wildcard character.
- Use '#' to describe where the variant is specified in the item number
- Use '%' if there are more than one wildcard character in succession
- Example: 3?-61009%#
For options:
- Here a template is set for which characters in the item number correspond to
- The code for this variant. '?' is used as a wildcard.
- Ex: ????101???"
Step 2
Choose method for setup
When creating items with variants, you have several ways to produce them:
- Creating a separate "main item/template" that is not a variant in itself.
- Select one of the variant items as "main item", and add all the variants under this item.
Creating your own template item
One way you can produce items with variants is to create a separate "main product/parent" to which you connect the variants. This template item does not have stock management or inventory. You can decide whether you want to set the price for the template, or whether it should inherit a price from one of the variants.
In the example below, we have created such an item. Under the Variants tab on the itemcard, we have added "Size" under variant type, and added the variant items under variants. You must specify on each individual variant which size it is, even if the item has the size in the name. Other settings here are whether the variants should inherit the price from the template (if this has a price) or whether they are controlled by their own price and whether the item should be web-active/active.
On the template item, you can also see the stock status of the variants, so that it is easy to keep track of the stock.
Adding variants to a parent item
Another way to make variants is to choose a variant item to be parent on which you place all the other variants. This item must have stock and stock management, in the same way as the other variants. When you add the variants of this item, you must also add the same item you pick as parent, as this is a variant itself. However, this should not inherit the price, as the price for this has already been set. If the other variants have their own price, they must not inherit the price either.
In the example below, you see how we have set up the variants of an item which is a variant in itself.
Variant neutral name
When choosing a parent item to add variants to, it is a good idea to add a variant neutral name to the item. This is to make the name of the product neutral in the product overview in the webshop. A variant item often has a product name that includes the variant type (in this example: "M" for given size). By going into the web text description on the item card and adding a Variant-neutral name, you can give it a name that does not say anything about the size or kind. In this example, we have added a name that does not show "M". This is only necessary to do on the variant which is a parent.
Step 3
Adding variant type and variant values to template
In the example below, you can see where you add the variants on the parent item and how to define the type and values. You must first add the type of variants, before the variants are linked to the correct value.
- Choose which variant type you want to use
- Add all the items that are supposed to be variants of the parent
When the variants have been added, you will find a field that has the same name as the variant type you selected. By clicking on this field, you get all the variant values, and you link the correct value to the correct item.
